At last Summer has arrived both meteorologically and in reality! Time to enjoy the warmth, the extra dosage of vitamin D and lots of clean, fresh air.
Yet how fresh is that air? This week I’m filming a TV and radio report about the amount of pesticides and weedkiller that’s ending up in our food supply, water and ultimately our bodies. A group of MEPs had urine tests and 99% of them tested positive for glyphosate, the chemical used in many farmer’s weedkillers and those we buy at our garden centres. There are many campaigners – including the famous organic farm Riverford near to where I’m working at the moment – who insist that we CAN grow food without using toxic synthetic and harmful products. I’ve personally had the test done and my blood levels of weedkiller were off the scale. Maybe all down to that beer and bread over the years.
It’s a subject that needs to be tackled so hopefully you might be able to see the report if it’s broadcast on Friday night on Spotlight (BBC1, Southwest) – that’s Plan A!
While I was newsreading at Radio 2 and 6 Music this week I heard the following track on the latter station.
